SLEEP MEDICINE/
NON-INVASIVE
VENTILATION

The respiratory sleep
disorders clinic (RSDC) is held every Friday afternoon. The
overall objective of the RSDC is to provide an investigative
service for the assessment and treatment of patients with
known or suspected respiratory sleep disorders. Work on a
sleep laboratory or sleep lab was completed on October 2006
and it is located near the respiratory clinic. Inside the
sleep lab, a sleep technologist work station occupies the
middle space next to an air-conditioned
patient room. The patient room is equipped with a reading light, intercom and a television. A portable oxygen concentrator is also available for patients who need supplemental oxygen during a sleep study. A store room inside the sleep lab keeps CPAP, BiPAP and various interfaces. The
sleep lab was officially opened on March 30,
2007 by the then Sabah State Health Director Datuk
Dr Rahimah Mohd Said.
The first full overnight
polysomnography was performed in the sleep lab on December 15,
2006. Polysomnography can now be performed every
night if needed. All
sleep studies are scored by two full-time sleep technologists and then
reviewed by a respiratory physician with the patients during follow up. The RSDC does not rely on computer-generated
scoring.
